Episode 33: Crafting a Sense of Place in New York with The Surrey, A Corinthia Hotel

At its core, the most memorable luxury experiences are not always the most extravagant; but rather, they are the ones that feel personal, thoughtful, and deeply connected to the destination itself.

Amidst one of New York’s winter cold fronts, I sat down next to a crackling fire with Pradeep Raman, Regional Vice President and Managing Director of The Surrey, A Corinthia Hotel. Our conversation explored how one of New York’s most storied neighborhoods is being reimagined through the lens of modern luxury hospitality through storytelling, personalization, and an unwavering connection to the Upper East Side. Recorded inside the hotel’s Bethesda Grandeur Suite—one of four signature accommodations inspired by iconic Central Park bridges and landmarks—Pradeep explains how every design detail throughout the property was intentionally curated to immerse guests in the character and history of the neighborhood. From crown moldings inspired by Central Park architecture to locally commissioned artwork and partnerships with tastemaking brands like Casa Tua, The Surrey was designed to feel less like a hotel and more like a cultural extension of the Upper East Side itself.

The project marked both a major restoration and a new beginning: the transformation of a beloved New York property into the first North American hotel for Corinthia Hotels. Over four and a half years, the team rebuilt the hotel with a focus on “grand boutique” hospitality, blending the intimacy and personalization of a boutique property with the scale and sophistication of a global luxury brand.

“We’re not just a hotel in the Upper East Side—we want to be the Upper East Side.”

For Pradeep, true luxury has little to do with chandeliers or marble finishes. Instead, it comes down to emotional connection and how a guest feels during their stay. Drawing from decades of experience with brands including The Ritz-Carlton, Montage Hotels & Resorts, and Wynn Resorts, he describes hospitality as a deeply human business centered around curiosity, empathy, and creating personalized moments that cannot be scripted.

That philosophy extends throughout the hotel’s culture and leadership approach. Empowerment, transparency, and compassion are central to how teams operate at The Surrey, creating an environment where colleagues are encouraged to think creatively, solve problems instinctively, and deliver highly individualized service. The result has been an unusually strong level of guest loyalty in the hotel’s first year of operation, with many visitors quickly becoming repeat guests.

“You come as a guest, you leave as a friend, you return as family.”

We then discussed how luxury travel continues to evolve alongside technology. While AI and personalization tools are becoming increasingly important behind the scenes, Pradeep believes the future of hospitality will always remain rooted in human connection. Technology, in his view, should quietly enhance the guest journey, never replacing the emotional element that defines great service.

That same emphasis on relationships shapes The Surrey’s close collaboration with travel advisors, whom Pradeep describes as trusted storytellers and essential partners in luxury travel. By building authentic relationships with advisors and delivering consistently memorable guest experiences, the hotel aims to create the kind of trust and confidence that turns advisors into long-term advocates for the brand. As Corinthia Hotels continues its expansion across North America, Europe, and the Middle East, The Surrey serves as both a flagship and a blueprint for the future of the brand: highly curated luxury experiences grounded in culture, community, and a strong sense of place.

We wrapped up our conversation with LTI’s signature rapid fire questions. For personal travel, Pradeep is planning to visit friends who own a resort with a private vineyard called Menenghetti in Croatia and stomping in the grapes. Looking back at the glamorous days of travel, he misses that travel used to be a full experience, whether enjoying a Bloody Mary from the A380 plane bar or journaling poolside while taking photos of your surroundings. The journey needs to be the centerpiece. Looking towards the future, something he believes could use a bit of innovation is the amount of passport and ID checks throughout the travel process – perhaps a one stop shop that ensures safety and streamlines everything.
